Radiate My Thyroid? What?! No Freakin’ Way!

Seventeen years ago I was diagnosed with an incurable disease. I had a goiter (picture at left) and auto-immune thyroid disease. Plus I was suffering with allergies, cold sores, poor immunity, and was 25 pounds heavier. My doctor recommended that I radiate my thyroid.

My gut instinct said, “no freakin’ way!” I questioned the treatment for thyroid disease. And, if I hadn’t, I would not have a thyroid today.

Year’s prior to my diagnosis, I watched my mother go through the modern medical treatments for cancer. In the 1980’s she had a radical mastectomy plus radiation. Subsequently, five years of blood testing and MRI’s showed her to be cancer-free. The surgery and radiation had apparently worked.

But, eleven years later, mom fainted and couldn’t stand up. At the hospital they discovered that the breast cancer had come back with a vengeance. It was now everywhere: in her lungs, her brain, her liver, and her bones.

I remember taking my mom to the hospital in Long Island for weekly radiation and chemo treatments. She never wanted to go. She told me it made her feel sick and she wanted to stop. But, we didn’t stop. We followed the modern medical protocol and didn’t question it.

As I watched her suffer I began questioning that treatment. So did my father. He read an article about a doctor that had healed himself of pancreatic cancer using a natural diet (Macrobiotic). So we tried it.

We switched mom from a standard American Diet to a more wholesome diet and immediately noticed changes. Her lips regained their pink color instead of the bluish gray they had become from the cancer treatments. And, the ashen color of her face was growing peachy once again.

It was obvious this new food was giving her a little more life. Like a houseplant that hadn’t been watered for a while; once you add water the plant perks up. That’s exactly what happened; she perked up a bit, but it wasn’t enough to bring her back (read full story here – Honoring My Mother’s Journey).

After my mom died I vowed that if I got sick I would not destroy my body with surgery or radiation. I would try a natural approach first.

So there I was… exactly four years to the date of my mother’s death. Sitting on the examination table listening wide-eyed as my doctor told me to take radioactive iodine to destroy my thyroid. She said my condition was “incurable.”

And, she was right. According to what she had learned in medical school, my disease was incurable.

Thankfully, I didn’t go to medical school, so I had a different perspective. I said, “hey doc, instead of destroying my thyroid, what if improved my diet?”

She said, “your diet has nothing to do with your thyroid.”

I didn’t believe that, and instead of leaving her office with a prescription to destroy my thyroid, I left with a focus on improving my diet to heal my body. I began by eating wholesome foods direct from the earth that didn’t come out of colorful pre-packaged boxes.

Four months later I returned to the doctor and my blood tests showed that my thyroid was changing. My hormone levels had dropped from dangerously high to just above normal.

My doctor said, “it’s still not in the normal range. You need medication.”

I said, “Thanks, but no thanks, doc. I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing.”

For the next two years I went for periodic blood testing with a new doctor each time to get a second and third opinion. Each doctor informed me I had a new and exciting disease. First it was hyperthyroid, then it was hashimotos thyroiditis, and then it was hypothyroid. They all recommended some type of medication to eliminate the symptoms my body was experiencing – all of which I refused.

Two years after my initial diagnosis with an “incurable disease,” I no longer had a goiter and my thyroid tested normal. It took time, patience, and a whole lotta self-love and self-care, to rebalance my body’s condition.

Sickness doesn’t happen overnight. My thyroid disease took twenty-eight years to develop. If you’re thinking about incorporating a natural healing plan, keep in mind that health and wellness doesn’t happen overnight either. Improved health doesn’t come after one magical cup of soup or plate filled with green vegetables. It can take years of eating well, exercising, and other natural healing practices to correct imbalances.

I am healthy today, but still consider myself in the process of healing. First my physical body, then my emotional body, and then my spiritual body – all of the layers that make me human.

Now, I’m in the process of helping heal the planetary body and the people of the earth. It’s a big job, and I’m going to need a lot of help. That’s why I created “The New Healers – Master Coaching Program” a class designed to teach students and wellness practitioners how to diagnose and heal physical, emotional and spiritual diseases.

Here are some basic steps to healing the thyroid:

  • Eat organic and clean foods: This is a no brainer. Pesticides and chemicals are endocrine disruptors. The thyroid lives on the endocrine system. Eat clean to ensure the endocrine system is not disrupted.
  • Eat Local and Seasonal: Food grown in or near the environment where you live is the best choice for your body. The pineal gland takes information from outside your body and relays it to the inside of your body. Eating out of season and/or out of climate sends mixed messages to your internal system, throwing the thyroid and endocrine system out of balance.
  • Eat Naturally Raised Animal Products: Factory farmed animals live in highly stressed conditions without access to fresh air, clean food and sunshine. If you eat animals that live a crappy life you absorb that energy. This can disrupt the body physically, emotionally and spiritually.

The above tips are a great place to start, but there is much more to healing the thyroid. If you want specific foods, plus how to heal the emotional and spiritual components of thyroid imbalance check out my Nourishing Thyroid DVD for the guidance you need.

And, if someone tells you to radiate your thyroid or that your disease is incurable, question it. Then give your body the physical, emotional and spiritual food (plus patience and love), it needs to truly heal. You can do it!

It’s go great to read your story. I have hypothyroidism and had I known at the time I was diagnosed that I could have fixed it via my diet I would have but the Dr. never even mentioned that option. My question is if I try now, can I or will I ever get to stop taking the medication?? Also my mother too was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. While I truly believe in the power of healing through foods, and I have tried to help her eat better but she is convinced it doesn’t work and puts all her faith in chemo. Some people get it, sadly many don’t : (

The key to helping your mom is to help yourself first. Your healing energy will radiate outward from you and may inspire her to do the same. And, yes… you can reduce your meds and heal your condition – it takes time, patience and self-love. Follow the guidelines in my DVD and be patient and loving with your body.

Andrea, I have you thyroid dvd and love it. But, I was wondering with the current lectures, possibly new information, might you record one of these lectures and maybe we could buy the download instead of making a new dvd? Kind of like taking one of your classes.

    Thanks,

Hello Andrea, I too have your thyroid DVD. I am hypothyroid with a non-cancerous note on the lower left lobe of my thyroid and I am working through trying to heal it my self. My daughter however was diagnosed with stage one thyroid cancer last fall. The only treatment they offered was removal of the thyroid, involved lymph nodes and radioactive iodide. Since she is a college age, legal adult, I had to let her make her own choice. I do however continue to worry about her moving forward. They had to give her a higher dose of radiation because there was so much lymph node involvement, and she will have to be on synthroid for the rest of her life. I want her to learn as much as possible about good nutrition and taking care of herself for life so that it doesn’t come back, but I don’t want to make her feel bad about the choices she has already made.

    • Andrea Beaman

Sending you and your daughter a big healing hug. Her choice was what was recommended to her. Now, it’s imperative that she support her adrenals because they are taking up the slack. With lumps and nodes on the thyroid be weary of milk products (dairy) it has a tendency to make things grow. Take it out of your diet for a period of time (6 mos -2 years). And, reduce or eliminate refined carbs and sugar.

  • http://www.tracidmitchell.com Traci

What a great post. It’s so important for people to not just eat, but understand why a clean diet will help them so much more than a SAD diet. I really enjoy reading your posts. Very motivating. Keep it up.

Hi Andrea, thank you for sharing. I am 34 years old and was diagnosed with hashimotos disease eleven years ago after the birth of my second child. I have been living with the up and downs of symptoms of this for too long now. My doctor put me on levoxyl 3 years ago because my symptoms were so severe. It helped for the short term but after having 5 children total and 5 miscarriages on top of that my poor thyroid is a mess. I am very interested in nutritional healing and very much into organic and clean eating. Could you help with some resources that might steer me in a good direction for meal planning and ideas for eating. Thanks for helping so many!

Hashimoto’s is auto-immune. The body is attacking itself. Go more toward the emotional/spiritual realm of healing and see where you may be attacking yourself (I’m not good enough, can’t believe I did that, what’s the matter with me?). And, reduce refined carbohydrates and sugars as much as possible. Plus, drink bone stock to help support your body and refuel what the baby took from you while you were pregnant. I have an entire chapter about the importance of bone stock in my new book: http://www.andreabeaman.com/health/health-is-wealth/#.T-sdsI4QglA

Hi Andrea, I am a fellow IIN grad of 2007. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 1992, was put on Synthroid for a goiter and now have a total of 6 nodules, 2 of which they want to biopsy. I had one biopsy in October, but they couldn’t pass through the “shell.” I am interested in your thyroid DVD and do eat clean, whole foods. Thanks for the great work you do!

    • Andrea Beaman

With nodules you have to reduce carbohydrates and sugar, and dairy (except butter). And, do NOT put a cell phone up to your face.

  • Richard Forgione

    Andrea,
From the first time I had the pleasure of meeting you (May 19th,1993 my 1st day back from “college”) I knew you were something special. You had (have) a smile that lights up the darkest of rooms and your personality is something so rare God wouldn’t dare duplicate it .
After mom had past, you had a more determined way about you and I believe it way the way of the world. To have someone such as yourself with that award winning personally and smile educate the world on how to eat right ,well , mom is looking down with that same smile she passed onto you ..For that I thank you.You are an inspiration.God Bless you Andrea Beaman.

    • Andrea Beaman

Thanks Richie! Sending you a big healthy hug and whole lotta love.

um….you have just written my story! I am also in the healing process from a enlarged thyroid and all the regular docs told me the same things, this disease, that disease….about 14 months ago I eliminated dairy and sugar and a host of other things, began to rely solely on chiropractic, nutrition, exercise and clean living, and the support of my wonderful husband. I have seen wondrous changes, and a shrinking thyroid on xray. I plan to just continue on this path, but sometimes wonder if it is enough, with occasional self doubt. Your story has just strengthened my resolve…I cannot thank you enough! You truly are an inspiration!!!

    • kdmquito

you can’t see your thyroid on an x-ray! Get blood work!

  • Blanca Hernandez

Thank you for the reply. I have ordered the dvd and am looking forward to learning how to get off Synthroid. I really like the comment you have about the Hashimoto’s disease. I have rheumatoid arthritis which is also auto-immune and I have refused to take any medication. I decided to try and heal myself with diet and exercise and while it has decreased the symptoms tremendously, I’ve not thought of it as on the emotional/spiritual realm. I feel like my eyes have just been opened and I thank you! You are an Angel of Well-being and Health!

  • Dawn B.

While I appreciate the path you chose for yourself, I do not think it would have been a wise choice for me. You see, I went for several years with a hyperactive thyroid due to a noncancerous nodule. I was told my symptoms were caused by panic attacks. By the time I found out what was wrong with me I was on the verge of a thyroid storm. I even had to go to the ER because my heart was beating so rapidly @ way over 200 BPM. If I had not gotten the radiation (ablation), I’m not so sure I would be here today. Now, I feel just as bad without thyroid function and having to take Synthroid, but in a different way. I have no energy at all, and I am overweight. I cannot get refreshing sleep which only compounds the problem. If not for the rapid heart rate and the shaking, I would rather be hyperthyroid, at least then I had energy and could get things done. Now I just feel I’m withering away. Maybe this diet change could help. Thank you.

  • Linda Hooker

Sorry that my daugther sent me this link today (I have one year and 7 days I got operated of my thyroids, according to the doctors they had to much nodules and that such nodules were too large so I need surgery, and believe me if I did know about healing by food, I would have said the “no freakin’ way”… Why I’m writting you is because I thought to myself that maybe you can help me out by giving me some advise about with type of food I can eat now that I don’t have my thyroids, so it can help me to control my weight and also my emotions, etc., etc. Thanks you for you time. Have a nice day.

My father was diagnosed as hyperthyroid yrs ago and had the radiation. He now deals with hypothyroid issues. Lots of meds. Wish he would understand all this. I myself have arthritis and fibromyalgia. I am dealing with it by clean eating and exercise. I feel better than most with it, but it is definitely a process. Sometimes I have to get back on the wagon. Stories like this inspire me to continue with this path. I could not deal with all the side effects listed for the drugs they want me to take. Those are worse than the disease itself! How can they justify it?

Andrea- I have multiple nodules (non-cancerous) on my thyroid and also have osteopenia. I was told to eat more dairy for the osteopenia, but this seems to go against your advice for reducing thyroid nodules. What do you suggest? As of my last ultrasound, there appear to be new nodules forming on the thyroid.

    • http://www.AndreaBeaman.com/ Andrea Beaman

Hi Rita – Yes, in general, whenever there are growths anywhere in the body I don’t recommend dairy products (except butter and un-homogenized full-fat yogurt in small quantities). Also, if your nodules keep growing I would reduce sugar, fruit and carbohydrates. Generally, sugar and carbs in excess can make nodules grow.
Plus Do NOT put a cell phone up to your face.
I cover all of that info in my Thyroid DVD
      .
Also, the endocrine system works very slowly. Patience and love is imperative when healing any illness associated with endocrine dysfunction. *

I feel weird that I now had my thyroid removed. I was in Thyroid storm, and was told I would die (my heart was going 245 beats a minute, tachycardia EKG) but your saying that I could have solved that by changing my diet….crazy

Andrea, I am thinking of buying the dvd. I follow a plant-based diet (no animal products) as this has healed me of digestive issues. Can I still heal myself with your plan?

I love your story and am in the process of trying to heal my thyroid naturally right now. I have made lots of changes and am still not where I want to be. I find it is reassuring to read that it took you a couple if years and to be patient. Great job!

  • Hypothyroid Mom

Fantastic article Andrea. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the title “Radiate My Thyroid? What?! No Freakin’ Way!” I love it so much that I posted it on my Hypothyroid Mom Facebook page. I am very sorry for the loss of your mother to breast cancer. Do you know if she had a thyroid problem? I ask because I have hypothyroidism and I had a breast cancer scare that scared the CR@P!! out of me last year. I found 50 years of research linking hypothyroidism to breast cancer and wrote a post about it on my blog Hypothyroid Mom this week in the hopes of warning women with thyroid disease to be vigilant about their breast health.

    • http://www.AndreaBeaman.com/ Andrea Beaman

Thank you for sharing the blog on your page. And, thank you for sharing your wisdom with the world. No, my mom didn’t have Thyroid Disease. But, there is a BIG connection between low iodine and both breast cancer and thyroid disease. There’s a good book by Dr. David Brownstein called Overcoming Thyroid Disorders that I like. http://amzn.to/UZ3tvO

Thanks Andrea. I’ll be sure to read Dr. Brownstein’s book. Much appreciated.

    Hi Andrea,
I take levothyroxine & T3 for years now & while my levels are within “normal” range now I notice no difference in energy or ability to lose weight. Would your thyroid dvd help me or is it too late since i’m on medication?
Thanks for any help to this question.

    • http://www.AndreaBeaman.com/ Andrea Beaman

I am a firm believe that as long as you are alive and breathing you can improve any condition. Medication just makes your thyroid lazy. It’ll take time, but you can eventually get off the meds and naturally heal your thyroid. Patience is the key.

  • kdmquito

Hmmm goiters have never been seen as a “incurable disease”…. I had one at age 11, treated it w/ thyroid medication. It went away, normal thyroid for.30+ years. 30+ years later I was diagnosed w/ another thyroid problem, hyper, along w/ nodules. I am taking thyroid medication, thyroid levels are back to normal. My diet has always been healthy as an adult, low sugar, carbs, exercise regularly, etc. Healthy diets are always good, but the evidence is not there to say that diet alone “cures” thyroid problems and is mis-leading to some who may ignore all other evidence and medical advances (e.g. only taking part of a thyroid, rather than removing all of it). Also medications differ, one may/maynot work for people – if its not working – you’re not feeling well, despite your levels improving talk to your doctor. I’m curious as to your training? Also you said it can take years to address thyroid problems – are your current thyroid levels all normal with your diet changes? Its always good to do your own research and to get second options – as people should do with what you put forward here as well.

    • http://www.AndreaBeaman.com/ Andrea Beaman

My auto-immune thyroid disease is considered “incurable.” The goiter was not my disease, it was a symptom of my disease. Thanks for your feedback. Yes, my thyroid levels are normal. Plus, I’ve had many clients that have healed their hashimoto’s, graves, and hypothyroid issues. It takes patience – which is what modern medicine doesn’t have time for. Sometimes it can take 2-3 years to heal a bodily condition. I believe we need to honor the body’s natural process. And, I agree with you, diet alone does NOT heal the body. We need to find the right balance of diet, lifestyle and consciousness, and that includes emotional and spiritual healing.

    Hello Andrea,

Firstly, I want to admit that, even as a male, I had tears in my eyes by the time I finished reading this post. You’re a lot like me, it seems. Let me explain below.

A month or two ago, I started seeing an integrative medicine doctor. After having numerous tests done, I was told that I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. I came to the clinic in hopes of finding out why I’d become basically impotent and why I was having various symptoms of generally not-great health such as daily anxiety/panic, lightheadedness, heat/cold sensitivities, hair loss, etc. So the fact that I knew what was going on after the tests was a relief. However, trying to wrap your head around having Hashimoto’s (a “non-curable condition”) isn’t easy to wrap your head around.

Anyway, I’ve been on this doctor’s therapy since then. I’ve been put on a strict eating plan which is almost strictly limited to organic, low-glycemic fruits, organic vegetables and organic white meats. He’s prescribed various supplements (all-natural from reputable nutrition companies such as Apex Energetics and Premier Research Labs). However, admittedly, I only take a handful of them. The ones that I take: liquid zinc, D3 Serum, Oxicell Cream (Antioxident Cream of Glutathione) and probiotics. The rest, which are more geared to the actual condition, I haven’t taken yet. They’re all more targeted and for the specific dis-ease, if you will. I just don’t see the point as I feel that I’d caused the onset of my own thyroid condition and I truly trust that it isn’t hereditary or whatever else.

I’ve been feeling better. However, I’m nowhere near where I want to be.

Anyway, just wanted to share. If you’d like to share your thoughts on where I’m at, please do.

    • http://www.AndreaBeaman.com/ Andrea Beaman

Hi Bruno – thanks for sharing your story. I’m happy to hear that you’re feeling a bit better. That’s a great sign. The key to healing the body is to be patient and loving as you go through the process of change. The endocrine system and the thyroid take time to heal. Keep up the great work. You can do it!

I had normal thyroid function on my labwork before this whole breast
cancer paducah started last year. I finished radiation treatments in
    July.

Lately I’ve been feeling puffy everywhere. My eyelids are swollen.
My ankles are puffy. I have a constant ringing in my ears, like I’ve
been to a rock concert without earplugs. I mentioned all this to my MO,
who ordered labwork, and I’m significantly hypothyroid now. She’s
guessing the scatter from the radiation treatments damaged my thyroid.

Anyone else experience this? Is it permanent? Will I need to take synthroid forever?

Like just having breast cancer isn’t enough.

Hi Andrea, what amazing stories. Thank you so much for sharing your story and your mother’s. I have been dealing with a very large cyst on my spleen. I was very sick for over a year before anyone even discovered it was in my body. I had surgery to remove the cyst (but they did not remove my spleen). I have been trying as many natural things as I can to rebalance my body, but the cyst came right back. It is much smaller now, but seems to be very slowly growing more each time we recheck it (every 6 months). I have drastically changed my diet, but am wondering what more could I be doing. I am enrolled in IIN and have loved your lectures and information. And I am signed up for your call this coming Tuesday. I have small children and want to feel well and be well, inside and out….and I don’t want to have my spleen removed (which I believe would be the next step conventional doctors would want to take if the cyst continues to grow or starts causing more symptoms like it had been before surgery). I’d love to know if you have any advice to guide me on my healing journey. Thanks so much. Your story has inspired me to be patient and keep trying.

    Lori

Hi Lori – I’m happy to hear you still have your spleen! That’s a great start. With cysts in that area of the body (and cysts in general) it would be wise to be cautious of eating too many cold foods (salads, frozen yogurt, iced drinks). It may be better to have stir fried veggies or cooked veggies instead. And, the spleen governs the sweet flavor so reduce or eliminate all sweets and most foods that turn to sugar (breads, grains, carbohydrates, sugars, fruits) for a period of time. And, reduce stress.

I have been diagnosed with Graves’ disease and the doctors talk about destroying my thyroid. I’d be on pills and others meds for life. My grandma had thyroid problems but after a year she was ok. I think that I’d like to try this approach. I mean look a Jack Lelane. He eats fresh fruits and veggies only and he’s healthier than me (35). The founder of Dole foods went on a round-the-world search for a cure to his wife’s cancer and came to the conclusion that only fresh fruit and vegetables were the key to a long and healthy life. His wife died however. I respect my doctors immensely but I do believe that big drug companies and surgeries billed to insurance companies run the health care world. I don’t think I’d by your DVD because I have a basic principle that ” if you didn’t grow it , don’t eat it”

I had graves disease, and type 1diabetes diagnosis 7 years ago. I unknowingly received radiation to kill my thyroid. I regret it had I known then what I know now I wouldn’t have done it! I’m currently synthroid but still have ejected tsh levels and my endo is really baffled. I’ve received homeopathic treatment for my thyroid but it did not respond. I’m thinking because my thyroid is essentially gone. I eat organic grass fed meats, avoid processed foods, and goitrogen containing plants. Is there any hope of healing naturally? I’m gluten, grain, and dairy free as well. The culprits that pissed my immune system are out of my diet. Just very lost at the moment.

    • http://www.AndreaBeaman.com/ Andrea Beaman

Hi Monique – the RAI destroyed the thyroid gland. You may not be able to bring your thyroid back, but you can certainly take care of your body to the best of your ability to help you live a healthier and happier life. You may want to consider taking a class on meditation or yoga to help your endocrine system relax and de-stress. Also, for the Diabetes, it’s imperative that you remember to chew your food throughly before swallowing it. Digestion begins in the mouth. The more you chew food, the less stress is put on your pancreas.

Hi Andrea, I have 6 nodules on my thyroid – I had a fine-needle aspiration on 5 of them and 4 were determined benign and 1 “Indeterminate – worrisome for papillary carcinoma”. The endo wanted to remove my thyroid before even doing the FNA – “atleast half”, she said. I refused and I still refuse as I’m not convinced that it is a wise choice even if it is cancer. I have been on a healing path (Gerson diet, emotional, spiritual, exercise energy work) since November 2012. The “worrisome” nodule has not shrunk any and seems to swell during menstruation). My thyroid levels were in normal range initially and have not had them checked since then. I am going to see an environmental doctor next week and I’m hoping that he will work with me from a holistic approach as I have not found a doctor who does not want to treat this by removing my thyroid.

I suspect a correlation between fluoridated & chlorinated water as I was drinking and steaming in it daily along with a Vitamin D & B12 deficiency I also had a root canal with multiple xrays just months before discovering the lump on my thyroid and I have mercury fillings that are starting to deteriorate at the age of 41. I’m going to have the fillings & root canal replaced with biocompatible material.

I feel in limbo not knowing whether it’s cancer or not but at the same time would not treat my healing process any differently and know that I will treat the whole body regardless of the diagnosis and cause. Does that make sense?

Thank you for sharing your story and encouraging those of us who need the courage and patience to heal ourselves naturally and holistically. God knows, we need the support!

    Thank you for listening,
